Altuve, out of action due to foot discomfort
Astros’ veteran player Jose Altuve did not participate in Sunday’s 8-3 loss against the Braves due to discomfort in his right foot, as announced by the team. Astros manager Joe Espada reported that Altuve was feeling “quite sore” before the game and was being evaluated by the medical staff. After the game, Espada indicated that Altuve could have played as a substitute if necessary.Espada did not rule out the possibility of Altuve returning to the field when the Astros begin a crucial series at home against Texas on Monday night, before the Seattle Mariners, leaders of the American League West, visit Houston on Friday. Espada described the discomfort as “on the sole of the foot, near the toes… Let’s hope it’s not a serious problem”. Altuve singled to right field in the third inning of Saturday’s 6-2 victory over Atlanta, before being forced out at second base after a groundout by Jesús Sánchez. The player reported the discomfort upon returning to the dugout and was substituted. The Astros began Sunday tied with the Seattle Mariners for first place in the American League West. Altuve, 35 years old, has a batting average of .264 with 25 home runs and 70 RBIs. Mauricio Dubón started at second base for the last game of the series.“He was available, but I don’t want to force it if the game doesn’t warrant it,” Espada stated. “But he feels better. We’ll see how he feels on Monday.”
