Marco Penge Wins Spanish Open and Secures a Place in the Masters

In an exciting golf day, Marco Penge, of English origin, won the Spanish Open, surpassing his compatriot Daniel Brown in a tiebreaker. This triumph secures him a place in the prestigious Masters and the Open Championship next year. Penge, who initially led with a four-stroke advantage, demonstrated his composure by achieving a birdie on the first playoff hole, thus securing his third title on the European circuit this year.

Dan and Joel Girrbach played really well today. They were sinking putts, and I couldn’t get the ball in the hole. I felt like I was really at a disadvantage. But I think I handled myself very well, and from tee to green, I feel like I played very solid. Putts don’t matter; I think I used them all yesterday, but obviously sinking that one was worth it.

This edition of the national tournament was special, as for the first time, the winner was guaranteed a direct place in the Masters and The Open.

It’s crazy. It’s a golf course I’ve always wanted to play, because I feel like my game suits it very well.

Penge, with a final round of 72 strokes (+1) on Sunday, tied with Brown at the top of the leaderboard, both with a total of 15 under par. Brown, who celebrated his 31st birthday on Saturday, rallied from five strokes behind, achieving an outstanding final round of 67 strokes (-4). Despite dealing with a right shoulder injury that required treatment, Brown forced a playoff with a birdie on the last hole. Previously, Penge, 27, had also been crowned champion at the Danish Golf Championship and the Hainan Classic. Joel Girrbach, with a round of 69 strokes, placed third with 14 under par. Jon Rahm, the local favorite, who was seeking his fourth title at the Spanish Open, was not in contention at the start of the final round, but closed with an outstanding performance of 65 strokes (-6), finishing in a tie for ninth place. Shane Lowry, like Rahm, was returning to action after his participation in the Ryder Cup, but he failed to make the cut at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.
