Morikawa Craves the “Absolute Chaos” of the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – After three days of practice rounds at the Ryder Cup, U.S. team member Collin Morikawa expressed on Wednesday his expectation for a more intense atmosphere at Bethpage Black.

I hope Friday is absolute chaos. I’m all for it. We want it. We want to use that to our advantage.

Morikawa, who is participating in his third Ryder Cup, has only played once on American soil, in 2021, when the American team dominated Europe at Whistling Straits. However, the two-time major winner pointed out that that tournament took place in a context marked by the pandemic, which diminished the atmosphere on the first tee. The anticipation for the reaction of the Bethpage crowd has been growing since the venue was announced in 2013. Historically, the local crowd has given a big advantage to the teams, with the host teams winning each of the last six Ryder Cups. The last team to win a cup as a visitor was Europe at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois in 2012. Morikawa believes the US team can take advantage of the “New York and the rest of the country’s madness” to their benefit. With the crowds gradually growing in the last two days, Morikawa has also noticed that some of the younger American fans have been requesting autographs from members of both teams. Morikawa expects the fans’ energy to intensify starting Friday.
