Fitzpatrick criticizes PGA for comparing Ryder Cup fandom

Following the culmination of the Ryder Cup, the controversy continues. European golfer Matt Fitzpatrick has responded to the statements of the PGA of America president, Don Rea, calling them “offensive to European fans”.

Fitzpatrick’s Answer

Rea, in an interview, compared the behavior of the fans at Bethpage Black with that of those present at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, venue of the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome. Fitzpatrick, visibly annoyed, rejected this comparison.

What the PGA of America guy said about it being the same in Rome… he clearly wasn’t there. Either he wasn’t there or he was listening to something else, because it was never like that. It’s always been playful, just banter. The interview with the PGA guy saying it was the same in Rome. That’s pretty offensive to the European fans.

Matt Fitzpatrick
Fitzpatrick, who is in Scotland for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, expressed his disagreement with Rea’s assessment of the atmosphere in Rome during the Ryder Cup. Additionally, Fitzpatrick perceived a lack of sincerity from Rea during the trophy presentation ceremony, after Europe defeated the United States with a score of 15-13. The British golfer felt that the congratulations were not genuine, which added tension to the atmosphere.
