Tellez vs. Mendoza: Co-Feature on the Fundora vs. Thurman card with a Cuban flavor

Yoenis Tellez will face Brian Mendoza in a co-main event

The Cuban boxer Yoenis Tellez has been called to face Brian Mendoza in a super welterweight fight that will serve as the new co-main event for Sebastian Fundora’s WBC super welterweight title defense against Keith Thurman.

The Tellez vs. Mendoza matchup replaces the heavyweight fight between Richard Torrez Jr. and Frank Sánchez, which was postponed due to complications with a knee injury for Sánchez.

Tellez (11-1, 8 KOs), 25 years old, suffered the first loss of his career when he lost by unanimous decision to Abass Baraou for the WBA interim super welterweight title last August. He recovered with a stoppage victory over Kendo Castaneda in December and is now ranked in the top 10 in the divisional rankings and serving as co-main event for the PBC pay-per-view event on Prime Video.

Mendoza (23-4, 17 KOs) knocked out Fundora in 2023 to obtain the WBC interim super welterweight title. Mendoza was losing on all three scorecards before achieving the impressive knockout that marked Fundora’s only professional defeat. Since then, he has a 1-2 record with losses to Tim Tszyu and Serhii Bohachuk, but returned to the win column with a TKO over Jesus Antonio Rojas last July.
