Ryan Garcia to Undergo Surgery on Right Hand
Ryan Garcia’s plans to return to the ring after his unexpected defeat against Rolando “Rolly” Romero will be postponed. The 26-year-old boxer will undergo surgery on his right hand, according to multiple reports.The injury, which was initially reported, occurred during the training camp prior to Garcia’s fight against Romero, held on May 2nd in Times Square. Instead of postponing the match, the Californian boxer decided to go ahead and received cortisone injections to mitigate the pain.
During the fight, Garcia showed caution, averaging only 17.5 punches thrown per round and a surprisingly low figure of 48 power punches. The combined total of 123 effective punches out of a total of 490 thrown between both boxers was one of the lowest in CompuBox history.
García’s surgery is scheduled for Wednesday morning. He will be operated on by Dr. Stephen Shin, a renowned hand specialist who has operated on figures such as Canelo Álvarez and Vasyl Lomachenko. García will be inactive for at least six weeks before he can resume training.There were plans for Garcia to face Devin Haney in a rematch later this year. However, the loss to Romero may have delayed that fight, as Garcia’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, has suggested that his boxer is looking for a rematch with Romero.
