Nuno Mendes, Paris Saint-Germain footballer, backed his teammate Ousmane Demb\u00e9l\u00e9 for this year’s Ballon d’Or. This came after Mendes claimed to have “nullified” Lamine Yamal during Portugal’s victory in the UEFA Nations League final against Spain.<\/p>\n\nPortugal won the victory in a penalty shootout that ended 5-3, after a 2-2 draw in Munich. The victory sealed the win for Portugal and an emotional Cristiano Ronaldo, who had to leave the field due to an injury.\n\nMendes was named Player of the Match after a standout performance in Roberto Mart\u00ednez’s team, where he scored his team’s first goal and dominated in his individual matchup with young star Yamal.\n\n

It was a confrontation [with Yamal] like many others I’ve had during the season. I’ve faced many great players, players with a lot of technique who can make a difference, but today I nullified Lamine and didn’t let him do what he does best.<\/p>Nuno Mendes<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n

When asked about his role in Portugal’s victory, Mendes admitted that he had won his duel against Yamal before predicting that Demb\u00e9l\u00e9 would surpass the young Barcelona player in the race for the Ballon d’Or.<\/p>\n\nMendes also highlighted the importance of consistency and individual and teamwork to achieve success.\n\n

I play with Ousmane [Demb\u00e9l\u00e9] and he had a wonderful season, Lamine also had a wonderful season. But Ousmane will be at the Club World Cup and Lamine won’t, so I’m very happy for Ousmane.<\/p>Nuno Mendes<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\nMendes praised Ronaldo after the 40-year-old player scored the second goal that tied the score on the way to Portugal’s triumph in the Nations League.
