This renovation includes new uniforms and logos that pay homage to its rich history.

The new designs were presented at a private event in Phoenix. The main objective was to modernize the image, adapting it to current times.

“We wanted to modernize the image instead of presenting something completely different,” said Vince Kozar, president of the Mercury.

Vince Kozar

The team realized they only had two usable logos, in addition to a wordmark. This made creating merchandise difficult.

The new image includes 14 logos, brands, and denominations. In addition, the team designed its own font for letters and numbers.

The Mercury were inspired by the image updates of other teams to guide their modernization process.

One of the most significant changes was the incorporation of the color purple, the team’s main color, into the logo. The updated “M” logo is a modernized version of the original, with details that evoke the franchise’s past.

The modernized “M” logo is placed on the planet Mercury, unlike the original logo. The logos also include subtle details that pay homage to the team’s history.

In both the main “M” logo and the global logo, the lines and the “M” are at an angle of 19.97 degrees, a nod to the organization’s inaugural season. The angle also represents the team’s and the league’s momentum.

In the global logo, the eight lines have two historical functions: a tribute to the rings of the original logo and a symbol that the Mercury were one of the eight original WNBA teams.

The Mercury also kept their “PHX” logo, created by Nike in 2021, due to its positive reception among players and fans.

The new Mercury marks incorporate the outline of the state of Arizona, and the team also presented a logo with the word “Merc”, as fans and employees have referred to the team for three decades.

The new Mercury designs incorporate the outline of the state of Arizona, recognizing that, although the team is based in Phoenix, it represents all of Arizona in the WNBA.

The redesign and image renovation was a process that took approximately two and a half years.

Phoenix Mercury Unveils New Look with New Uniforms and Logos For the first time since its founding in 1997, the Phoenix Mercury team has revealed a renewed image.
