The Arizona Diamondbacks have reached an agreement with veteran catcher James McCann for a one-year contract of $2.75 million. The deal, announced on Friday, includes the possibility of earning up to $500,000 in bonuses.<\/p>\n
McCann, 35, joined the D-backs in June and proved to be a productive player, batting .260 with 5 home runs and 17 RBIs. His performance was especially valuable in helping the team’s young pitchers, such as Ryne Nelson and Brandon Pfaadt.<\/p>\n
McCann is expected to take on the role of backup to Gabriel Moreno, who had an outstanding season last year, batting .285 with 9 home runs and 40 RBIs. Moreno has had to deal with injuries that have prevented him from playing at various times over the last two seasons.<\/p>\n
McCann’s agreement includes bonuses based on the time he remains on the team’s active roster. The catcher will earn an additional $100,000 after 50 days on the roster, $125,000 more after 75 and 100 days, and an additional $150,000 after 125 days.<\/p>\n
James McCann, who was selected for the All-Star in 2019 while playing for the Chicago White Sox, is preparing for his thirteenth season in the Major Leagues.
