A group of promising freshmen leads the class, showing a rapid rise. This is a good time to present our first mock draft of the season.

NBA executives have had the opportunity to evaluate prospects in key November games, including the Champions Classic and the Players Era championship in Las Vegas. This draft is shaping up to be one of the strongest in recent memory, with high-level players at the top and great depth in the first round.

It’s important to remember that these projections are subject to change. They are based on conversations with NBA executives and scouts, and on my own evaluation. The draft order was determined using ESPN’s BPI rankings as of November 14th.

First Round of the Draft

1. Brooklyn Nets

Darryn Peterson, PG/SG, Kansas

With averages of 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in two games, Peterson has proven his worth. His ability to score at multiple levels, his physical qualities, and his defensive tenacity place him among the most complete freshman guards. Peterson’s possible absence due to a hamstring injury could open the door for other prospects.

The Nets urgently need a star to lead their team, and Peterson could be the solution.

2. Washington Wizards

AJ Dybantsa, SF, BYU

Dybantsa has shown his scoring potential, although he still needs to improve his consistency. His impressive physique gives him great potential as a scorer and defender. The Wizards are looking for a young star to build their offense around, and Dybantsa could bring the dynamism they lack.

Image description: AJ Dybantsa performs a spectacular dunk.

3. His consistent performance keeps him in the conversation at the top of the draft. The Jazz, who have had a good start to the season, could need Boozer as a central piece.

4. Indiana Pacers

Nate Ament, SF/PF, Tennessee

Ament has been productive against lower-level opponents. Sacramento Kings

Mikel Brown Jr., PG, Louisville

Brown showcased his potential with a standout performance against Kentucky. If he develops his three-point shot, he could have a good future in the NBA. The Mavericks could need a young star to accompany Cooper Flagg.

9. Memphis Grizzlies

Jayden Quaintance, C, Kentucky

Quaintance is recovering from an injury, but his potential as a vertical shooter and dunk threat is promising.
