WASHINGTON – Alex Ovechkin continues to make NHL history. The forward scored his 903rd career goal, helping the Washington Capitals beat the Los Angeles Kings with a score of 2-1 on Monday night.<\/p>\n
Ovechkin also surpassed Gordie Howe, becoming the player with the most regular season goals scored at a single venue in NHL history, with his 442nd goal at Capital One Arena.<\/p>\n
Matt Roy also contributed a goal for the Capitals, who managed to break a two-game losing streak, allowing them to move up in the standings.<\/p>\n
Anze Kopitar scored the only goal for the Kings, who were coming off a four-game winning streak. This loss represented only their second regulation loss on the road this season.<\/p>\n
Washington, which has struggled to execute plays in 5-on-5 situations, opened the scoring early. Roy positioned himself in front of the net and deflected a shot from Aliaksei Protas, beating Darcy Kuemper. This was Roy’s first goal in 25 games, dating back to the previous season.<\/p>\n
In the second period, Ovechkin approached the goal and took advantage of a pass from Connor McMichael, scoring a goal. Ovechkin has scored goals in consecutive games and in three of his last four games.<\/p>\n
Kopitar brought Los Angeles within one goal with his third goal of the season, with 6:33 left in the second period. He scored after a pass from Corey Perry on a power play. Washington has conceded power play goals in three consecutive games and in five of the last six.<\/p>\n
Despite the effort, the Kings failed to overcome Charlie Lindgren, who stopped 30 of 31 shots, achieving his second win of the season after losing his previous four starts.<\/p>\n
