Left-handed pitcher Ryan Weathers is set for his season debut with the Miami Marlins, facing the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Weathers, who recovered from a left flexor strain suffered in March during spring training, completed a successful rehabilitation in the minor leagues. In his last outing with Jacksonville on May 8, he pitched five scoreless innings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last season, Weathers went 5-6 with a 3.63 ERA in 16 starts with Miami. He was expected to be the team’s second starter this year, behind Sandy Alcantara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Marlins, who have lost three straight games and 13 of the last 16, faced Jameson Taillon, after blowing a two-run lead in the ninth inning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a related move, Miami sent left-handed pitcher Anthony Veneziano to Triple-A Jacksonville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Weathers will be the first left-handed pitcher to start a game this season for Miami. Manager Clayton McCullough hopes his return will boost the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\u201cI think what Ryan was showing in spring training was elite stuff,\u201d McCullough said. \u201cI think the stuff he has from the left side is, well, premium stuff. Ryan Weathers is the son of former Major League pitcher David Weathers, who played 19 seasons in the majors with nine teams, including the Marlins and the Cubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
