Los Angeles Kings captain Anze Kopitar has been placed on the injured list due to a significant foot injury, the team announced on Friday.<\/p>\n
Kopitar’s injury, which will keep him off the ice for several weeks, occurred during the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday, in which the Kings fell 4-2.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred on Monday, when Kopitar received a shot to the foot by a deflected puck during the shootout loss against the Minnesota Wild.<\/p>\n
This season marks Kopitar’s twentieth and final year in the NHL, a career that has been entirely with the Kings. The Slovenian center announced his imminent retirement last month, at the start of training camp.<\/p>\n
Kopitar, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, has twice won the Selke Trophy as the NHL’s top defensive forward. In addition, he is the second-highest scorer in Kings history and has been selected for the All-Star team five times.<\/p>\n
The Kings have had a difficult start to the season, accumulating three consecutive losses and a 1-3-1 record. The new general manager, Ken Holland, made few changes to the roster that matched the franchise records in points and wins last season.<\/p>\n
