What is ALS?<\/h2>\n\n\nAmyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. Messages from motor neurons in the spinal cord and brain stop reaching the muscles, causing them to weaken, become rigid, and atrophy. Currently, there is no cure for ALS, but treatments can help manage the symptoms.\n\nThe disease usually develops after the age of 50 and reduces life expectancy. Other rugby players such as Doddie Weir and Rob Burrow have died after being diagnosed with the disease.\n\n\n

ALS Symptoms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Early symptoms include stiff or weak hands, trouble grasping objects, weakness in legs and feet, which may cause stumbling. Muscle spasms may also appear. Late symptoms include breathing, swallowing, and speaking problems. About half of people with ALS experience changes in their thinking and behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ALS Diagnosis<\/h2>\n\n\nNeurologists can diagnose ALS through tests such as blood tests, nerve tests, and MRIs. The progression of symptoms can vary, making diagnosis difficult.\n\n\n

Types of ALS<\/h2>\n\n\nALS affects around 5,000 people in the UK at any one time. The most common form is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which causes weakness and atrophy in the limbs. Bulbar-onset ALS primarily affects the muscles of the face, throat, and tongue. Other forms include progressive muscular atrophy and primary lateral sclerosis.\n\n\n
