Pittsburgh Pirates Fire Derek Shelton<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced this Thursday the dismissal of their manager, Derek Shelton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision comes after a negative streak for the team, with seven consecutive losses and ten in the last eleven games. Currently, the Pirates (12-26) are ten games behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shelton managed the Pirates from 2020, accumulating an overall record of 306-440 without achieving a winning season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I thought he was the right person for the job when we hired him. I also believe a change is now necessary,” said General Manager Ben Cherington.<\/p>\n\nBen Cherington<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Pirates President Bob Nutting noted the need to “act with a sense of urgency and take the necessary steps to correct this now and get us back on track as a team and organization,” highlighting that “there’s still a lot of baseball to be played.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
