Luis Torrens Returns to Action with the Mets<\/h2>\n\nBackup catcher Luis Torrens was reinstated to the 10-day injured list by the New York Mets, as they attempt to secure a playoff spot.\n\nTorrens had been out of action since September 7 due to a contusion on his right forearm. After going 0-4 with two strikeouts on Tuesday in his only rehab game with Triple-A Syracuse, he was available off the bench on Wednesday night against the San Diego Padres at Citi Field.\n\nNew York started the day with a 1 1\/2 game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks for the last National League wild card.\n\nStarting catcher Francisco \u00c1lvarez was back in the lineup after leaving Tuesday night’s 8-3 victory in the eighth inning, when he was hit on the left arm by a 100 mph fastball from Padres rookie Bradgley Rodr\u00edguez.\n\n\n

“As soon as it happened last night, when he went out to the field, I thought he was going to be out. It didn’t sound good, from the dugout,” said Mets manager Carlos Mendoza. “He was in a lot of pain. So I knew he was going to be out of the game, right? And then, before the game is over, he’s in the dugout with ice and a smile on his face. I said to myself, wow.”<\/p>\n\nCarlos Mendoza, Mets Manager<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\nMendoza marveled at the toughness and determination shown by Alvarez, 23, who was already playing with a broken little finger on his left hand and a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb.\n\n\n

“It’s amazing,” Mendoza said. “This guy is something else, man.”<\/p>\n\nCarlos Mendoza, Mets Manager<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\nTo free up a roster spot for Torrens, the Mets sent catcher Hayden Senger to Syracuse.\n\nTorrens, an excellent defender with a strong arm, batted .225 with five home runs, 29 RBIs, and an OPS of .635 in 87 games.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
