This passion is manifested at all levels, from youth categories to the NHL, where the tension is palpable. A clear example was the 4 Nations tournament last February, which began with three fights in the first nine seconds of the first match and culminated in a dramatic victory for Canada in overtime.
The next battle could take place at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Although both teams are in different groups, the possibility of a gold medal match is high, given their status as hockey powerhouses.
Canada has dominated Olympic matchups since the NHL began sending its players in 1998, with a record of 4-1, including two gold medal final victories in 2002 and 2010. However, the 4 Nations tournament showed that the gap has narrowed. The United States has strengthened its roster with highly skilled players and, especially, with solid goaltending. Selecting the right team for 2026 could be the key to success.
In this context, we analyze the possible alignments for the 2026 Olympic Games. Rachel Kryshak, analyst at Alofoke Deportes, selected her ideal team for Canada, while Greg Wyshynski, also from Alofoke Deportes, did the same with the United States team.

Canada Team

Description:

Greg Wyshynski suggested some changes to the lineup, arguing that Sidney Crosby should rest due to his advanced age. He also mentioned the need for Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, and Connor McDavid to have time to recover before the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Rachel Kryshak agreed on the need for rest for Auston Matthews and Quinn Hughes. Wyshynski questioned the absence of Mark Stone and Brad Marchand from the Olympic list, suggesting it could be due to age.
Kryshak explained that Stone’s speed and injury history, along with Marchand’s position as a more limited role player in Florida, influenced his decisions. He also highlighted that he believes Celebrini will surpass both players in the future, and praised Suzuki and Jarvis as elite players.
Wyshynski focused on the inclusion of Nick Suzuki, debating whether he is truly an elite player. Kryshak defended Suzuki, arguing that Canada often chooses “role players” instead of the best, which has cost them dearly at lower levels. He opted for Suzuki over Cirelli due to his offensive skill and penalty-killing ability.

Description: Nick Suzuki has been a critical component in the Canadiens’ recent rise. Will he make his way onto Canada’s Olympic roster?
Regarding Connor Bedard, Kryshak justified his inclusion, allowing for the possibility that he will excel in his third NHL season. Bedard would need to be a player of at least one point per game and stand out against difficult teams to secure his place. If Bedard does not deliver, Robert Thomas could take his place, although Kryshak did not rule out that Canada might opt for Cirelli or Stone.
Wyshynski praised the inclusion of Evan Bouchard in the defense, arguing that his ability to create plays is valuable. Kryshak acknowledged Bouchard’s mistakes, but affirmed that his ability to make a difference is crucial.
In the net, Kryshak predicted debates about who should be the starting goalie, mentioning Binnington, Thompson, and Blackwood. He acknowledged that goaltending remains a vulnerability for Canada due to the inconsistency in the goalies’ performance.

Description: Jordan Binnington has excelled in high-pressure situations in recent seasons.
Kryshak assessed Canada’s chances of winning its fourth men’s hockey gold medal at 7 out of 10, noting that other nations have improved in player development. Although Canada still has elite players, the depth of talent has decreased. The performance of the goalies will be the deciding factor.

United States Team

Description:

Kryshak praised the talent of the United States, especially in the goal. Wyshynski mentioned that the deficiencies in the forward position were evident in the 4 Nations tournament, highlighting the lack of players with great offensive skill.
Wyshynski decided to leave Chris Kreider and Brock Nelson off the Olympic roster, arguing that the decision not to include Tage Thompson was a mistake. He also expressed his admiration for Keller’s overall game and skills.
Kryshak praised the inclusion of Matthew Knies, highlighting his physical play and goal-scoring ability. Wyshynski suggested that Knies could be a better option than Alex Tuch.

Description: Matthew Knies plays on Auston Matthews’ wing for the Maple Leafs. Will they also play together for Team USA?
Regarding Jack Hughes, Wyshynski acknowledged his disappointing performance in the 4 Nations tournament, suggesting he was misused by being placed on the wing. He expects Hughes to play at center alongside J.T. Miller and Thompson.
Kryshak warned about the risks of that line, considering the moments of Hughes and Miller. He highlighted that the presence of those players would open space for Hughes.
In defense, Adam Fox was debated, with Wyshynski questioning his inclusion. Kryshak defended Fox, highlighting his playmaking ability. Pairing him with Jaccob Slavin was suggested.
Wyshynski mentioned the lack of John Carlson on the list, arguing that there are younger and fresher options. The defense seems to be defined, with a change of Noah Hanifin for Seth Jones.
Kryshak and Wyshynski discussed Lane Hutson, with the possibility of Hutson earning a spot on the team. The strength of the American team lies in its goaltending, with Connor Hellebuyck and Jake Oettinger as primary options.
Wyshynski acknowledged that Hellebuyck has struggled at important moments, while Oettinger has shown his ability to elevate his game in the playoffs. The possibility of Thatcher Demko playing instead of Swayman was also considered.

Description: Connor Hellebuyck won the Hart Trophy as the NHL MVP last season, in addition to his third Vezina Trophy as the best goaltender.
Kryshak and Wyshynski discussed the importance of the IIHF rules, which could limit the physical play of players like the Tkachuks and Sam Bennett. Wyshynski joked about the need for a “policeman” on the team and wondered who Binnington would face.
Wyshynski highlighted that, although the United States has the talent to compete with Canada, the performance of key players is crucial. Kryshak anticipated another exciting overtime game.

United States vs. Canada: A Legendary Rivalry on the Ice The rivalry between the United States and Canada transcends hockey, establishing itself as one of the most intense and competitive in the world of sports.
