Warrick, seeing Anthony on the court at Manley Field House in the summer of 2002, wasn’t entirely convinced.

“I looked at him and thought, ‘Is this chubby kid the one everyone is so excited about?’” Warrick recounted.

Hakim Warrick

However, the guard soon understood why. Anthony, with his talent and versatility, quickly stood out, scoring 27 points in his college debut against Memphis at Madison Square Garden. His only season at Syracuse was an unprecedented success, leading the team to a 30-5 record and winning the NCAA championship in 2003.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim highlighted Anthony’s importance to the team, mentioning his ability to win games. “Carmelo won, that’s the most important thing. He was a great player and he won,” Boeheim stated.

Although he didn’t win championships in his 19 seasons in the NBA, Anthony has avoided being defined solely by rings. His induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is a recognition of his achievements and the path he traveled.

Anthony is the NBA’s tenth all-time leading scorer with 28,289 points, third on the USA Basketball scoring list, and a winner of four Olympic medals, including three gold. In addition, he was selected 10 times for the All-Star and six times for the All-NBA, and is part of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team.

More than for what he didn’t win, Anthony earned his reputation for what he did to try to win in the NBA.

<img decoding="async" src="https://a4.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=%2Fmedia%2Fmotion%2F2025%2F0403%2Fdm_250403_nba_sas_on_melo%2Fdm_250403_nba_sas_on_melo.jpg" alt="Stephen A. For example, in the 2003 draft, if the Detroit Pistons had selected Anthony instead of Darko Milicic, how would history have changed?

“I really believe that if we had recruited Melo that year, we would have won at least three championships,” said Chauncey Billups.

Chauncey Billups

Another hypothetical scenario involves his decision not to join LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh in 2010. Anthony explained that he didn’t want to be the fourth option on a team.

In the 2008 Olympic Games, Anthony shone, demonstrating his scoring ability and being key to the chemistry of the United States team. Jason Kidd highlighted his role as a mature player who maintained harmony in the team.

In 2012, Anthony led the Knicks, taking the team to the playoffs and winning the scoring title. Although they didn’t win the championship, Anthony revitalized the Knicks and established himself as an elite scorer.

Pau Gasol reflected on Anthony’s ambition and confidence to lead the Knicks. Boeheim added that Anthony raised the level of his teams, being one of the best three-dimensional scorers in history.

Another “what if…” is Gasol’s injury in 2019, which gave Anthony the opportunity to return to the NBA and add more points to his career, culminating in his entry into the top 10 NBA scorers.

Anthony, with his record of winning shots in the last seconds and his Olympic medals, remains an icon. His performance at the 2012 Olympic Games, with 37 points in record time, is remembered as “otherworldly”.

Jason Kidd highlights Anthony’s confidence in crucial moments. His championship with Syracuse still resonates, and the university’s basketball training center bears his name, a testament to his impact.

“His career is as good as it can be,” Billups concluded.

The Legacy of Carmelo Anthony: A Basketball Icon in the Hall of Fame Hakim Warrick still remembers his first impression of Carmelo Anthony, more than two decades ago, before a game at Syracuse University.
