The New York Mets have decided to call up right-handed pitcher Brandon Sproat to start Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. This decision marks the third time in less than a month that the team has promoted one of its top pitching prospects to bolster its starting rotation.<\/p>\n
Sproat, 24, was considered the Mets’ top pitching prospect at the start of the season. However, he fell a bit behind Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong in the organization’s depth chart, as both players quickly ascended from Double-A to the Major Leagues in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
McLean has won each of his first four starts, with an ERA of 1.37. Tong allowed a clean run in five innings in his debut last Friday and is scheduled to pitch again on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The 2025 season for Sproat has been a tale of two chapters. The player, selected in the third round of 2023, recorded an ERA of 6.69 in nine starts for Triple-A Syracuse through May 20, before rebounding with an ERA of 3.19 in his final 17 outings. Excluding a relief appearance in which he allowed seven runs on August 24, Sproat has an ERA of 2.78 in 16 starts since May 25.<\/p>\n
Sproat concluded this streak on Saturday with seven scoreless innings, with nine strikeouts and two walks. He will take the mound on Sunday, with a week of rest, to conclude a three-game series in Cincinnati against the team chasing the Mets for the third National League wild card spot.<\/p>\n
