His efforts helped expand NASCAR&#8217;s national footprint, solidifying Charlotte as a must-visit racing and entertainment complex.<\/p><cite>Jim France, NASCAR Chairman<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\nHoward Augustine Wheeler Jr., was born in 1938 in Belmont. He got his first major advertising job with Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. After the closure of Firestone&#8217;s racing program in 1970, he held several more positions and was hired at the Charlotte Motor Speedway by owner Bruton Smith as president in 1975.\n\nHe became a transformative figure in promoting racing and was known as the &#8220;P.T.
