Memphis, Tenn. – Golfer Scottie Scheffler faced an unexpected change at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, turning to a tour chaplain as his caddie for Sunday’s final round.<\/p>\n
Ted Scott, Scheffler’s usual caddie, had to be absent due to a family emergency in Louisiana.<\/p>\n
Scheffler started the final round two strokes off the lead.<\/p>\n
Brad Payne, chaplain for several PGA Tour players and president of the College Golf Fellowship, took on the role of caddie.<\/p>\n
Payne is a close friend of the world’s number 1 and had already held this position before.<\/p>\n
Scheffler turned to Payne as a substitute caddie in the third round of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla, due to Scott’s daughter’s graduation. This event occurred right after Scheffler was arrested for not following police instructions during a traffic accident investigation.<\/p>\n
On that occasion, Scheffler had a round of 73 strokes, attributing his performance to adrenaline after one of the most unusual episodes in a major: the Masters champion was arrested, jailed, released, and returned to Valhalla in time for his tee time, achieving a round of 66 strokes. The charges were later dismissed.<\/p>\n
