Following a period of decline in the rankings, Tandy, with roots in Tonmawr and former player and coach of the Ospreys, returns to his homeland after six years as Scotland&#8217;s defense coach.\n\nTandy becomes the first Welshman to lead the national team since 2007, at a crucial moment where Wales is ranked 12th in the world. The team broke a streak of 17 consecutive losses by beating Japan last month, in the last match of Matt Sherratt&#8217;s interim tenure.\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n\n<p>&#8220;The privilege and honor of being head coach of your country is huge,&#8221; Tandy stated.<\/p>\n\n<cite>Steve Tandy<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\nThe coach also highlighted the pride and importance of family in Welsh rugby, promising to work hard to take the team to new achievements.\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2025%2F0807%2Fr1528942_1296x729_16%2D9.jpg\" alt=\"Steve Tandy ha sido presentado como el nuevo entrenador principal de Gales.\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\nBefore the current decline, Wales reached the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup under the direction of Warren Gatland, and won the Six Nations in 2021 with Wayne Pivac. Gatland&#8217;s return in 2025 did not bring an improvement in results, marking his departure during the Six Nations of that year.\n\nThe Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has set the ambitious goal of Wales being among the top five teams in the world by 2029. Tandy firmly believes in Welsh talent and the importance of a process of continuous improvement.\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n\n<p>&#8220;We have to build performances incrementally. From campaign to campaign, we have to be better and see how we can build that performance with the exciting group we have,&#8221; added Tandy.<\/p>\n\n<cite>Steve Tandy<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\nTandy, who won the Pro12 competition during his time at the Ospreys, has worked in Australia and Scotland, and was also defense coach on the 2021 British and Irish Lions tour.\n\nThe coach will start his work on September 1, preparing for the autumn matches against Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa.
