World motorsport has a new name etched into its history books. The young Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli has been crowned Formula 1 world champion this Sunday, following an outstanding performance at the Mexico City Grand Prix. With this result, the Mercedes racer secures the title with four grands prix remaining in the season.

At 20 years old, Antonelli not only celebrates his first championship, but has also set an unprecedented milestone by becoming the youngest champion in the history of the top category, surpassing the record previously held by the German Sebastian Vettel. Furthermore, this triumph marks a historic moment for Italian sport, as it ends a 73-year drought without a monarch of that nationality, since Alberto Ascari was crowned in 1953.

The competition at the Mexican racetrack was dominated by the Dutchman Max Verstappen, who secured his sixth victory at this circuit and the 74th of his professional career. The podium was completed by the Briton Lewis Hamilton, representing Ferrari in second place, while the third-place finish was enough for Antonelli to celebrate the world championship in front of the fans.

With Antonelli’s coronation, Italy reaches four world drivers’ titles in Formula 1 history, adding to Ascari’s two championships and the one obtained by Giuseppe Farina in 1950.

A generational change at the top

The new monarch succeeds the Briton Lando Norris on the throne, who finished the day in fifth position, just behind his teammate, the Monegasque Charles Leclerc. Antonelli’s consistency throughout this year has been key to consolidating a lead that today positions him as the new great figure of international motorsport.
