Renowned Ethiopian marathon runner Ruti Aga, who achieved glory at the 2019 Tokyo Marathon, has received a resounding six-year suspension imposed by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). The decision was made after her positive doping test was confirmed and, more seriously, for attempting to obstruct the investigation process through fraudulent documentation.<\/p>\n\n
The case dates back to March 15, during the Meishan Renshou half marathon in China, where the 32-year-old athlete claimed victory. After the event, tests revealed the presence of methylprednisolone in her system, a substance classified under the S9 category of glucocorticoids, the use of which is strictly prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) during competitions.<\/p>\n\n
Aga’s situation worsened considerably during the investigation. According to the AIU report, the runner attempted to manipulate the process by providing false information in an interview conducted in April 2026. Subsequently, she presented a medical prescription that supposedly justified the consumption of the substance for outpatient treatment.<\/p>\n\n
The investigation determined that the prescription came from a non-existent clinic and that the alleged doctor was a relative of the athlete who lacked a license to practice. Furthermore, the medical center confirmed that this person had never worked there.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n
Although the athlete argued that the consumption was related to a knee injury, the evidence presented failed to support her version. As a result, the AIU applied a combined sanction: two years for the anti-doping violation and an additional four years for document forgery, totaling six years of professional disqualification.<\/p>\n\n
