Brazilian forward Vinícius Júnior has been handed a four-match suspension following the incidents that occurred in the recent clash against Villarreal, a significant loss that includes his absence from the highly anticipated El Clásico against FC Barcelona.

The decision, communicated this Wednesday by the Disciplinary Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), responds to the events that took place in the 73rd minute of the match. According to the referee’s report, the attacker was sent off with a direct red card after assaulting Nathan Saliba, whom he grabbed by the hair during an action in which the ball was not in play.

Suspension details

The sanction is broken down as follows, based on articles 127 and 130.2 of the Disciplinary Code:

Two matches for violent conduct off the ball.

Two additional matches due to angry protests and the aggressive attitude shown towards the head referee after receiving the red card.

Due to this punishment, the Brazilian star will not be able to see action in the duels against Sevilla, FC Barcelona, Racing de Santander, and Valencia. The match against the Blaugrana team, scheduled for October 25 at the Spotify Camp Nou, will be the most notable absence for Carlo Ancelotti’s scheme.

The Disciplinary Committee dismissed the allegations presented by the white club, considering that the images supported the referee’s report and allowed for the confirmation of the hair-pulling, without sufficient evidence to determine a manifest material error.

Real Madrid unsuccessful in their allegations

Real Madrid’s board of directors attempted to revoke the sanction by filing allegations, arguing that there was no punishable violent conduct of such magnitude. However, the Committee ratified the report of referee Isidro Díaz, who was assisted by VAR to review the play that, in addition, led to the annulment of the second goal for the ‘merengue’ team.

Although the club managed to get the yellow card imposed on Konaté during the same match rescinded, they did not have the same luck regarding Vinícius. The forward, following the stir caused, used his social media to offer apologies to both his team and the fans for his behavior on the pitch.

Vinícius Júnior’s apology post on Instagram

Harsh penalty: Vinícius Júnior misses El Clásico and three other matches Real Madrid has received a major blow ahead of their upcoming La Liga fixtures.
