The Shanghai Masters 1000 has been the scene of a tense moment involving Spanish tennis player Rafael Jódar. During his round of 16 match against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, the Madrid-born player was involved in a controversy due to his inappropriate behavior toward one of the ball boys on the court.

The situation escalated when Jódar, visibly frustrated, addressed the assistant in an angry tone, demanding the towel in a discourteous manner. This reaction did not go unnoticed by the chair umpire, the Ecuadorian Jimmy Pinoargote, who decided to intervene immediately to sanction the Spaniard with an official warning for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Faced with the admonishment, Jódar defended his position by arguing that his frustration was due to the young man not listening to his requests, insisting that there was no malicious intent in his words. However, the incident has reignited previous criticisms regarding the tennis player’s temperament on the court.

Background that generates debate

This episode has brought to fans’ memories other complicated moments in the athlete’s career. In particular, an incident that occurred at Roland Garros last May has been recalled, when he was questioned about an alleged shove to a ball girl. At that time, Jódar clarified that it was an accident and that he would never have inappropriate conduct toward support staff.
