Residents of Camino Engombe Street, in the El Café de Herrera sector of Santo Domingo Oeste, experienced a night of anguish when a fire completely consumed several homes last Saturday. The blaze, which began around 8:00 p.m., left five families homeless, having lost all their material belongings in a matter of minutes.

Among the most heartbreaking testimonies is that of 89-year-old Juan Antonio Rubio. The senior citizen recounted that he was in his prayers when he was surprised by the rapid spread of the flames.

I was left only with the shorts I was wearing, because I was in the bathroom, praying, and I had to run out and leave everything behind. That’s where I lost everything, everything, everything I had. Everything burned down.
Juan Antonio Rubio, affected person.

An urgent call for solidarity

Those affected still do not have an official report on the causes of the fire, although the hypothesis of a possible short circuit predominates among the neighbors. William Rodríguez, another of the victims, expressed his despair at the total loss of his assets, including appliances and basic necessities.

Rodríguez, who suffers from a physical disability, made a desperate plea to the authorities. “I am a crippled man, I cannot work. We need real help,” he stated after losing his home of more than three years.

Impact on families

- Loss of school supplies: José Miguel Ubrí Morillo’s children, aged three and nine, lost their uniforms and notebooks, hindering their return to the classroom.

- Neighborhood solidarity: Residents of the sector have supported those affected with clothing and temporary shelter, but the needs for mattresses, food, and hygiene items remain critical.

- No fatalities: Fortunately, no deaths or serious injuries were reported, as all occupants managed to evacuate in time.

The affected families, among whom is also Marilandi Morillo Montero, are requesting support from government institutions and the general public to be able to rebuild their lives after this unfortunate event that has left an entire community in shock in Santo Domingo Oeste.
