During the 41st session of ECLAC, held in Santiago de los Caballeros, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) made an urgent call for the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean to move from theory to practice. The high-ranking official emphasized that the main current challenge is to transform technical recommendations into concrete actions that respond to global geopolitical and economic changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Towards a new vision of the Americas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
The OAS representative proposed abandoning the prevailing negative agenda to build a shared vision based on unity, connectivity, and prosperity. According to his vision, this process requires:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Comprehensive connectivity:<\/strong> Strengthen digital, air, maritime, and land infrastructure to facilitate exchange.<\/li>\n
- Tourism and culture:<\/strong> Foster mutual understanding between peoples through educational programs and social exchanges that build trust.<\/li>\n
- Constructive dialogue:<\/strong> Recognize differences between States without preventing joint work in areas of common interest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Economic challenges and the role of the private sector<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
A critical point addressed was the low level of trade integration in the region, which limits the countries’ ability to influence the global economy. The need to produce greater value-added goods instead of limiting themselves to the buying and selling of basic commodities was highlighted. In this scenario, the private sector plays a fundamental role, as it must go beyond wealth generation, committing itself to democratic strengthening and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Diversification and fiscal capacity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Within the framework of the event, economist Jos\u00e9 Antonio Ocampo highlighted the importance of diversifying the region’s economic relations, avoiding excessive dependence on a single partner. Ocampo stressed that current opportunities lie in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- The adoption of the digital economy and artificial intelligence.<\/li>\n
- The sustainable use of natural resources and the protection of biodiversity.<\/li>\n
- The strengthening of fiscal capacity and international tax cooperation to alleviate the burden of public debt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
