Although U.S. authorities have called for calm, there is active vigilance regarding any potential risk of spread outside the controlled environment.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Washington is evaluating the situation with caution. “If something like this spreads outside of a controlled environment, it can spread rapidly. That is why we are observing and monitoring it closely. I do not believe it is a cause for alarm, but it does require attention and follow-up,” Rubio pointed out.

Details of the incident at the Anti-Plague Institute

The worker, identified in preliminary reports as Daria, was in her early twenties and worked at the Siberian and Far Eastern Anti-Plague Institute, located in Irkutsk. Unofficial versions suggest that the infection may have occurred after the accidental breakage of a test tube or during an expedition to areas where the Yersinia pestis bacterium naturally circulates among rodents such as marmots.

Pneumonic plague can be transmitted from person to person, hence the concern this generates.
