Following the results of the first round of the election, the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the challenger Flávio Bolsonaro have begun to make their moves to consolidate support ahead of the second round, scheduled for next October 25th.

The official count closed with 47.03% of the votes for Bolsonaro and 45.16% for Lula. This scenario not only reflects a tight race, but also a significant strengthening of the Liberal Party (PL) in the National Congress and regional governorships.

Strategic movements and alliances

Lula, who publicly acknowledged his surprise at the initial results, held a private meeting with his campaign team and political allies in Brasilia. The main objective is to readjust his electoral strategy. Among the proposals being considered to gain ground, the intention to accelerate a bill focused on reducing the workday, one of the progressive leader’s flagship promises, stands out.

On the other hand, Flávio Bolsonaro’s bloc seeks to expand its voter base. According to Valdemar Costa Neto, president of the PL, the plan consists of adding the support of center-right parties such as União Brasil, Republicans, and Progressives (PP), which have a caucus of 128 deputies. Likewise, work is underway to attract figures such as the conservative Ronaldo Caiado, who obtained fourth place in the elections.

Brazil seeks a different path than the one proposed by Lula’s project.

Michel Temer, former President of Brazil

On this political board, former president Michel Temer has made his support for Bolsonaro official, reaffirming the historical political distance he maintains from Lula. Meanwhile, other candidates, such as Augusto Cury and Renan Santos, have chosen to remain neutral regarding the runoff election.

Financial market reaction

The economic response was immediate. Financial markets reacted with euphoria to the possibility of an administration more oriented toward economic openness and privatization, pillars of Bolsonaro’s proposal. The São Paulo stock exchange recorded a historic jump of 7.70%, reaching 206,911 points, while the Brazilian real appreciated 4.11% against the dollar.

Petrobras on the rise: Shares of the state-owned oil company climbed 8.1%, driven by investor expectations regarding dividend payments.

Model differences: While Bolsonaro bets on spending cuts and privatization, Lula maintains his focus on social investment and increasing taxes on higher-income sectors.

The market maintains high expectations regarding a policy that, unlike Lula’s administration, prioritizes immediate profitability for shareholders, just as it did during Jair Bolsonaro’s term.

Brazil begins electoral race: Lula and Bolsonaro define strategies after first round The political landscape in Brazil has entered a decisive phase.
