According to those affected, the launch of this feeder route for the Santo Domingo Metro negatively impacts the operations of hundreds of workers who have provided service in the community for decades.

Eudis Sánchez, president of one of the local transport associations, reported that more than 300 workers in the sector are being harmed by this measure. The leader questioned the lack of dialogue with the organizations that have traditionally covered the route, noting that they were excluded from any planning process prior to the installation of the new system.

If a feeder service to the Metro is to be created, it must be done with those who have been providing that service for 20 years. We are not opposed to modernization, but we demand that those who already operate in the area be taken into account.
Eudis Sánchez, transport leader.

Investments and unfair competition

Carriers emphasize that they have made significant investments to keep their units in optimal condition and have their own facilities, including a 475-square-meter terminal and an additional 1,200-square-meter space, resources that, in their view, could be integrated to strengthen the transport system instead of being displaced.

Another critical point of the complaint is the temporary free service of the new corridor. The drivers assert that this modality represents unfair competition that directly affects the livelihood of hundreds of families, especially when local transporters have maintained affordable fares, ranging between RD$20 and RD$35, for the last 20 years.

They demand greater government support

Soberiano Sosa, a representative of the sector, confirmed that they have attempted to establish contact with the authorities to express their dissatisfaction regarding the lack of a formal summons.

Kelvin Díaz, a leader affiliated with Fenatrano, called on the Government to provide greater support to the sector in light of the constant increase in operating costs, such as the price of fuel and LPG.

The transporters warned that they will continue their efforts with the corresponding authorities to protect their sources of employment and their rights acquired since 2004.

Finally, the sector’s representatives in Santo Domingo Norte reiterated that, if they do not receive a satisfactory response to their demands, they do not rule out the possibility of organizing days of protest to defend the stability of their routes and the jobs that depend directly on them.

Santo Domingo Norte transporters report being affected by new OMSA corridor Public transport leaders in the La Jabilla area, in Santo Domingo Norte, have expressed their firm rejection of the implementation of a new Metropolitan Office of Bus Services (OMSA) corridor.
