On an election day marked by anticipation, civil engineer Soledad Núñez, representative of the Juntos por Asunción Alliance, has emerged victorious in the Asunción municipal elections. With 99.92% of the polling stations counted, the Preliminary Electoral Results Transmission System (TREP) confirmed that the candidate reached 47.78% of the votes, securing her position as the eighth mayor of the capital.

The contest was extremely close, with Núñez managing to prevail by a narrow margin over his pro-government rival, Camilo Pérez, who had the backing of the National Republican Association (ANR-Colorado Party) and currently presides over the Paraguayan Olympic Committee.

Asunción voted, Asunción won. Today the people won, today the dream of living in a city that works won, today the will of the people who do not give up won, the people who resist, the people who do not sell themselves.
Soledad Núñez, mayor-elect of Asunción.

A necessary change of command

Núñez’s arrival at the mayor’s office marks a milestone by displacing the Colorado Party, which has maintained an almost uninterrupted hegemony in public administration for the last 79 years, both in dictatorial and democratic periods. This change occurs after the administration of Luis Bello, who held the position since August 2025 following the resignation of Óscar Rodríguez, whose administration was subject to an administrative intervention that exposed severe financial illiquidity in the municipality.

Citizen participation and political projection

The electoral process recorded an increase in citizen participation, reaching 61.75% compared to the 59.65% recorded in the 2021 municipal elections. Likewise, 6,652 blank votes were counted, exceeding the 5,069 reported five years ago.

Political analysts from Alofoke Deportes point out that these results serve as a key thermometer ahead of the 2028 presidential elections. For the ruling party, currently led by President Santiago Peña, the result in the capital represents a significant challenge in its intention to maintain political control of the country in the coming years.
