The higher education institutions UNAPEC and APEC established themselves as the top exponents in the kata category during the karate tournament, corresponding to the 2026 University Sports Games. This competition, which is part of an ambitious sports calendar, is organized by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation (MIDEREC), under the direction of Minister Kelvin Cruz, in conjunction with the Dominican Association of University Rectors.<\/p>\n\n
In the women’s category, the UNAPEC team won the gold medal. The podium was completed by the Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), which took the silver medal, while APEC and O&M shared third place. Individually, Perla Peralta (UNAPEC) took the gold, followed by Monserrat Salazar (PUCMM) with the silver, while Johanliz Corneille (APEC) and Yagreisy Medrano (UTESA) took the bronze.<\/p>\n\n
For their part, in the men’s division, APEC students demonstrated their superiority by taking first place. PUCMM repeated in second place, while the Universidad Cat\u00f3lica Nordestana (UCNE) and O&M shared the honors of the third step. On an individual level, Lizardo Germ\u00e1n (APEC) took the gold, Fernando Hern\u00e1ndez (PUCMM) obtained the silver, and Edward V\u00e1squez (O&M) along with Poncio Landr\u00f3n (UCNE) closed with the bronze.<\/p>\n\n\n
The awards ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister of Sports, Juan Vila, who represented Minister Kelvin Cruz, accompanied by Jos\u00e9 Luis Ram\u00edrez \u201cBorola\u201d, president of the Dominican Karate Federation, who were in charge of presenting the medals to the outstanding athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n
The 2026 University Sports Games continue to consolidate themselves as a key platform for the country’s young talent, bringing together more than 2,300 athletes from 23 higher education institutions.
