Political leader Omar Fernández addressed the recent statements by Wilson Isidor, clarifying the stance on the geographical and historical identity of our nation. In a forceful message, Fernández underscored that the island of Hispaniola is a territory shared by two sovereign states, the Dominican Republic and Haiti, refuting any attempt to confuse the identity of both nations.

The debate arose following a soccer match where the Haitian national team secured a 4-1 victory. While Fernández extended congratulations for the team’s athletic performance, he emphasized that triumphs on the playing field should not be used to blur the historical boundaries and sovereignty that define each country.

No, Wilson, Hispaniola is not Haiti. Hispaniola is an island shared by two sovereign nations, the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
Omar Fernández

Respect for national identity

Fernández emphasized that sports pride is legitimate for any athlete or fan, but clarified that this sentiment cannot take precedence over respect for the island’s geopolitical reality. The message was direct regarding the necessary distinction between the two cultures:

- The recognition of Dominican sovereignty is non-negotiable.

- Sport should not be a vehicle to distort history or national identity.

- Each nation possesses its own autonomy and the right to be distinguished individually.

Finally, the leader reiterated that, just as the Haitian people feel pride for their national team, Dominicans maintain a deep zeal and love for their homeland. With the firm conviction that “Haiti is Haiti and the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Republic,” he closed his speech by invoking the national motto: “God, Fatherland and Liberty.”
