According to representatives of the guild, the current imbalance between local production and the entry of foreign products is putting at risk the profitability and sustainability of hundreds of families that depend on this economic activity.

Julián Abud Martínez, president of the Dominican Republic Pork Producers Association, detailed that the national industry has managed to cover approximately 70% of domestic demand. However, he denounced that current imports reach nearly 80%, which creates competition that he described as unfair for Dominican breeders.

We do not ask, we demand that Dominican producers be respected and that there be a balance between production and imports. The activity not only supports direct producers, but also boosts a wide value chain that includes:

Breeders and fatteners.

Freight transporters.

Slaughterhouse and butcher shop personnel.

Retail merchants, including chicharrón sellers.

Abud Martínez described this chain as a true circular economy, highlighting that a large part of those involved are young people from the countryside who find their main source of livelihood in pig farming.

Call for dialogue and possible measures

Although the producers’ stance is firm regarding the need for adjustments, the association’s president reiterated that the priority remains dialogue with the Government to find constructive solutions. However, he warned that the sector will remain vigilant and organized.

In the event of not receiving a satisfactory response that protects national production, the association’s board of directors will meet to define the next steps. Abud Martínez did not rule out the possibility of carrying out street mobilizations as a pressure tactic, although he emphasized that they will always prefer the peaceful path and consensus over any confrontation.

Pork producers demand balance in the face of the impact of imports The pork industry of the Dominican Republic has raised its voice to government authorities, requesting an urgent review of the pork import policy.
