A school day in the town of Staskov, in northern Slovakia, turned into a scene of horror this Tuesday when a student between 13 and 14 years old carried out a violent stabbing attack. The incident left one teacher dead and two other people injured, one of them in critical condition.

According to official reports, the aggressor, who is in the eighth grade, was immediately detained by local authorities. The Slovak Police have confirmed that the situation at the elementary school is under control, while the relevant investigations are being initiated to clarify the motives behind the incident.

The attack has shocked this small community of approximately 3,000 inhabitants. Among those affected is a 44-year-old teacher who suffered injuries to her sternum; fortunately, she is reported to be stable and out of danger. Likewise, a classmate of the attacker was seriously injured and remains under hospital medical care.

The rapid intervention of the security forces allowed the minor to be contained and prevented the tragedy from having even greater consequences for the rest of the students present at the school.

Possible triggers for the attack

Although investigations are ongoing, details have emerged regarding the minor’s personal environment. The student lived with his grandmother, who had reportedly recently forbidden him from continuing his activities as an altar boy due to notably poor academic performance. It is speculated that this restriction may have been the determining factor that triggered the teenager’s emotional crisis, leading to this violent act.

Background of violence in educational centers

This regrettable episode adds to a worrying list of events in Slovakia’s education system. Since 2005, at least eleven serious incidents involving firearms or bladed weapons have been recorded in the country’s schools, tragedies that have claimed the lives of five people to date.
