The deception occurred following the tragic passing of Zeneida, wife of merengue artist Julián Oro Duro and sister-in-law of the artist, who was stripped of valuable jewelry during the criminal incident.

The scammers’ modus operandi

Taking advantage of the family’s vulnerability amidst their mourning, an unknown individual used the phone number 849-529-9813, setting up their WhatsApp profile with Tolentino’s photograph. The subject contacted Sarante’s manager, claiming to have information about a value chain that had not yet been recovered by the authorities.

The scammer initially requested 20 thousand pesos under the pretext of covering transportation expenses to Barahona to deliver the jewel.

The family, trusting the figure of the communicator, made the transfer to an account in the name of Ramón A. Dicent.

After receiving the first payment, the criminal demanded an additional 120 thousand pesos, claiming that the item was pawned.

Intervention by the authorities

Araceli Melo’s suspicion was key to stopping the fraud. After contacting communicator Gary Acosta, she managed to reach the real Ramón Tolentino, who confirmed that it was a case of identity theft. The case was immediately reported to the National Police spokesperson, Colonel Diego Pesqueira, and to the DICRIM authorities, who are working alongside DICAT to dismantle this network.

Sometimes there is a lack of control… they use a profile of ours with a number that is obviously not ours to scam Yiyo Sarante in my name, supposedly to recover one of the missing pieces of jewelry.
Ramón Tolentino

Warning to the public

During his intervention, Tolentino made a direct appeal to the holder of the bank account used to receive the funds, urging them to present themselves before the National Police to clarify their involvement in the incident. Likewise, the communicator was emphatic in warning the Alofoke Deportes audience about these types of maneuvers.

“Criminals have no mercy. In any circumstance, no matter how difficult, they will take advantage to try to profit. Tolentino will not ask you for money.
