The legendary power forward left an indelible mark, being remembered not only for his dominance in the paint, but for being a true pioneer in the American professional league.

Pettit went down in history as the first player to receive the NBA MVP award in 1956, an accolade he would win again in 1959. His career, spent entirely with the Hawks franchise (both in Milwaukee and St. Louis) between 1954 and 1965, was marked by a scoring and rebounding ability that few have managed to match.

A track record of records

Stellar averages: In 792 official games, he recorded an average of 26.4 points and 16.2 rebounds per game.

Statistical pioneer: He was the first player in league history to surpass the 20,000-point mark.

Legacy with the Hawks: He led the team to win the 1958 championship, the only title in the franchise’s trophy case, and remains their all-time leading rebounder with 12,849 boards.

Recognition: He was selected 11 times for the All-Star game and his name was immortalized in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970.

Bill Russell, Boston Celtics legend and multi-time champion, defined Pettit as probably the fiercest competitor to have ever played.

From being discarded to professional glory

Bob Pettit’s story is one of overcoming adversity. In his early school years, he was rejected by his high school basketball team for two consecutive years. However, a growth spurt of 12 centimeters in just one year transformed his physique and allowed him to lead his school to the state championship. After a brilliant stint at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he averaged astonishing numbers, he made the leap to professional basketball.

Since his arrival in the NBA as Rookie of the Year in 1954, Pettit never slowed down, maintaining averages of over 20 points and 12 rebounds during each of his 11 seasons. His departure marks the end of an era for basketball fans, who will always remember his unmatched competitiveness and his fundamental contribution to the development of the modern NBA.

Basketball mourns the passing of Bob Pettit: an eternal NBA legend The sport of basketball is in mourning following the confirmation of the passing of Bob Pettit, one of the most iconic figures in NBA history, at 93 years of age.
