The judicial decision comes after he was found guilty of first-degree sexual assault, a case stemming from the complaint of former production assistant Miriam Haley, who stated that she was forced to perform oral sex in 2006.

Weinstein, 74, received the sentence while remaining in a wheelchair. Although the former Hollywood mogul faced a maximum sentence of 25 years, the magistrate opted for a 15-year sentence. During the hearing, the judge stressed that, although the defendant’s health has declined, his history and behavior define him as a sexual predator.

The impact of the case and the position of the Prosecutor’s Office

The Prosecutor’s Office had requested a 20-year sentence, arguing that Weinstein’s actions represented a significant threat to society. Public Ministry representatives highlighted that the former producer never showed real remorse and has systematically refused to take responsibility for his actions.

The magistrate stated that Weinstein will be remembered for his films, a legacy that will forever contrast with the reality of having become the literal face of the #MeToo movement.

Alofoke Deportes

The victim’s testimony

Miriam Haley, the accuser, took the floor during the hearing to express the emotional and psychological impact the process has had on her life. After years of dealing with a painful secret, she confessed to having been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
