According to reports from the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET), atmospheric instability conditions will continue over the next few hours, increasing the risk of significant rainfall across much of the national territory.

José Luis Germán Mejía, Deputy Director of Information Management at the COE, emphasized the importance of citizens staying alert to official bulletins. The official made a direct appeal to the population to avoid crossing rivers, streams, and creeks, which present a high danger of flash floods due to soil saturation.

Prevention and citizen education strategies

As part of its preventive efforts, the COE has launched an educational digital platform led by “Polito,” the institutional ambassador for risk management. Through the agency’s official website, citizens can access educational material and action guides for various emergency scenarios.

On that platform, you will find instructions on what to do before, during, and after any situation, whether it be due to rain, an earthquake, flooding, or a landslide.
José Luis Germán Mejía, Deputy Director of the COE

Urban vulnerability and waste management

When analyzing the particular situation of the National District, the COE representative highlighted that the majority of the flooding recorded in the capital is classified as urban flooding. These occur fundamentally due to the inability of the storm drainage system to manage large volumes of water in a short amount of time.

Drainage problems: The saturation of storm drains prevents the rapid circulation of water.

Impact of waste: The accumulation of trash on public roads obstructs drains, worsening flooding during downpours.

Risk zones: Strict surveillance is maintained in sectors adjacent to bodies of water, where vulnerability is considerably higher.

Finally, the authorities urged the population to take an active role in prevention, avoiding throwing waste into the streets and maintaining constant attention to the updates issued by the COE and INDOMET to ensure the safety of their families.

Official COE publication on the alert status

Greater Santo Domingo on yellow alert due to tropical wave incidence The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has ratified the yellow alert for Greater Santo Domingo and the National District due to the persistence of rains generated by a tropical wave.
