Thermal indices are expected to exceed 37 degrees Celsius consecutively, with the northwest region being the area of greatest concern.

This climatic phenomenon is due to the combination of the hottest season of the year with the arrival of dry and stable air masses, added to the presence of Saharan dust particles that will intensify over the coming weekend.

Background of high temperatures

The warning comes after a week where the thermometer has recorded significant levels in various provinces. Between September 9 and 15, temperatures fluctuated between 37.2 °C and 38.7 °C, with the following records standing out:

Boca de Mao, Valverde: 38.7 °C (September 12).

Sabaneta, Santiago Rodríguez: 38.6 °C.

Jimaní, Independencia: 38.0 °C.

Santiago Botanical Garden: 37.9 °C.

Arroyo Loro, San Juan: 37.8 °C.

Monte Cristi: 37.2 °C.

Regional projections

According to climate projections, the northwest region remains at risk of severe heat. On the other hand, in the central, eastern, and southeastern zones, conditions will remain in a moderate to severe range, with temperatures oscillating between 33 °C and 37 °C, which will generate an oppressive heat index for citizens.

Given these conditions, INDOMET recommends that the population stay hydrated, drink water frequently, and wear light, loose-fitting clothing, preferably in light colors.

Health and prevention recommendations

Meteorological authorities urge citizens to strictly follow prevention measures to avoid health complications:

Avoid direct sun exposure during the critical hours of 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Pay special attention to vulnerable groups: children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic or respiratory illnesses.

Ensure the well-being of pets by providing them with shade and constant access to fresh water.

INDOMET reiterates the call to the population to stay informed through official bulletins, given that the persistence of extreme heat requires self-care measures over the coming days.

Extreme heat alert: Dominican Republic faces temperatures of up to 39 degrees The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET) has issued a preventive warning regarding the forecast of extreme heat conditions that will affect a large part of the national territory during the period from September 16 to 22.
