Fuerza del Pueblo requests special treatment for Dominican rice within the framework of DR-CAFTA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The People’s Force (FP) party has raised its voice in favor of the country’s rice producers, formally requesting that the United States authorities grant special treatment to Dominican rice. This petition seeks to safeguard national production and avoid the negative consequences that an abrupt displacement of local farmers would have on the nation’s social and economic stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal was presented by H\u00e9ctor Acosta, Secretary of Agricultural Affairs of the organization, during a press conference in which he was accompanied by the Secretary General, Antonio Flori\u00e1n, and the Deputy Secretary General, C\u00e9sar Fern\u00e1ndez. Acosta emphasized that this request is made in a spirit of respect for current trade commitments and recognizing the United States as a fundamental strategic ally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Dominicans, rice is not just another commodity on a list of commercial products. Socioeconomic impact and structural differences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

From the Fuerza del Pueblo, they emphasized that the rice sector is a pillar of the rural economy, involving tens of thousands of producers and generating hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs. The activity impacts more than 20 provinces and sustains a vast value chain that includes transporters, millers, and input distributors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this sense, the leader highlighted the marked gaps between both countries:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Productive inequality:<\/strong> While the U.S. relies on high mechanization and large tracts of land, the Dominican producer, especially those in the Agrarian Reform, works small plots averaging about 50 “tareas”.<\/li>
  • Food security:<\/strong> 45% of the national rice production depends directly on the efforts of these small plot holders.<\/li>
  • Regional background:<\/strong> The organization warned about the risks observed in neighboring countries when competing against massive agricultural systems, underscoring the need to protect local food sovereignty.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    A call for dialogue and harmonization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The Fuerza del Pueblo clarified that it does not seek to disregard the free trade agreement (DR-CAFTA), but rather to find a mechanism that allows for the harmonization of the interests of both countries. A direct call was made to the White House, the Department of Agriculture (USDA), and U.S. diplomatic representatives to establish a dialogue that considers the particularities of the Dominican market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
