Its main function is to filter most of the type B and C ultraviolet (UV) radiation, whose direct exposure would be devastating for living beings.<\/p>\n\n<p>Without this natural filter, humanity would face critical risks, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Significant increase in skin cancer cases.<\/li><li>Prevalence of cataracts and vision problems.<\/li><li>Weakening of the immune system.<\/li><li>Irreversible damage to phytoplankton, the base of the marine food chain.<\/li><li>Reduction in agricultural crop yields.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Montreal Protocol: An unprecedented success<\/h2>\n\n<p>During the 1980s, the scientific community raised alarms after detecting a hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica, caused by the intensive use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in aerosols and refrigeration systems.
