This initiative seeks to identify and correct early on any deficiency that may hinder the learning process and the students’ performance in the classroom.

As a direct result of these medical operations, 5,499 students benefited from the delivery of corrective lenses, thus guaranteeing a better quality of life and vision. In addition, the program included the performance of 30 ophthalmological surgeries for more complex cases, ensuring that the minors receive the necessary treatment for their comprehensive development.

Early detection in educational centers

The sessions are carried out directly at school campuses, where specialists in the field perform evaluations to detect warning signs that often go unnoticed. Among the most common symptoms that parents and teachers should observe are difficulty reading the board, recurring headaches, eye strain when reading, or the constant need to get too close to books and notebooks.

Sometimes children do not know how to express that they cannot see well or do not identify that they have a difficulty. That is why taking the evaluation to the educational center is fundamental to detect any visual condition in time.
Doctor Ana Zabala, in charge of Health at INABIE

An example of the positive impact of this program is the case of Samantha Alexa Tavares, a student at the Rosa Calcaño Lino educational center in Samaná. Her mother, Francheliz Tavares, recounted how the minor suffered from frequent headaches and constant eye strain, which were addressed in a timely manner thanks to these health evaluations.

Access to specialized services

INABIE continues working to expand the coverage of these services, offering a flow of care that includes:

Comprehensive ophthalmological and optometric evaluations.

Provision of corrective lenses at no cost to students.

Referrals for specialized treatments and surgeries when the diagnosis requires it.

Continuous medical follow-up.

Additionally, the institution keeps its doors open for visual health consultations at its main headquarters, operating from Monday to Friday from 8:00 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon. Those interested can manage their appointments through the organization’s official web portal to receive the necessary care.

INABIE strengthens academic performance through school visual health sessions The National Institute of Student Welfare (INABIE) has reaffirmed its commitment to academic success by providing specialized visual health care to a total of 116,269 students during the 2025-2026 period.
