This clarification comes in the wake of the investigation into suspected cases recently reported in a community in southwestern Haiti.

The head of the health portfolio, Víctor Atallah, emphasized that the actions executed by the authorities do not respond to a national health emergency, but rather to an exercise in preventive responsibility. The main objective is to strengthen health services to detect any eventuality quickly and activate the necessary response protocols immediately.

The Dominican Republic has no recorded cases of anthrax, nor is there a health emergency. Among those affected, two deaths have been reported, although it has not yet been confirmed that anthrax is the direct cause. Preliminary investigations suggest that the possible source of infection is direct contact with sick livestock.

What is anthrax and how is it prevented?

Anthrax is a pathology caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, which primarily affects herbivorous animals such as cows, sheep, and goats. According to specialists, the risk of contagion in humans occurs mainly through direct contact with infected animals or products derived from them that are contaminated.

The disease is not usually transmitted from person to person.

The risk of human contagion through contact with someone affected is extremely low.

Preventive measures include strict animal health surveillance and control of animal movement.

To ensure safety, the Ministry of Public Health maintains coordinated work with the Ministry of Agriculture and the General Directorate of Livestock. This joint effort seeks not only to improve timely detection, but also to ensure that the Dr. Defilló National Reference Laboratory has the necessary diagnostic capacity to address any eventuality.

Finally, the authorities urge the Dominican population to stay informed only through official channels and reiterate that these measures are part of the country’s routine health preparedness protocols.

Public Health strengthens epidemiological surveillance due to anthrax outbreak in Haiti The Ministry of Public Health of the Dominican Republic has issued an official statement to reassure the public, confirming that the country remains free of cases of cutaneous anthrax, commonly known as anthrax.
