According to data collected up to the first days of September 2026, a total of 284 deaths by suicide have been recorded in the national territory.<\/p>\n\n<p>This report takes on special relevance as it is released in the context of World Suicide Prevention Day, a date established every September 10th to raise public awareness and promote public policies for prevention and psychological care.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gender gap and monthly distribution<\/h3>\n\n<p>The data reflect a significant disparity in terms of gender. Of the total deaths, 249 correspond to men, which represents 87.68% of the cases, while 35 were women, equivalent to 12.32%.<\/p>\n\n<p>When analyzing monthly behavior, the report details the following distribution:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>January and February: 34 cases each.<\/li><li>March: 29 cases.<\/li><li>April: 31 cases.<\/li><li>May: 32 cases.<\/li><li>June and July: 44 cases each (being the months with the highest incidence).<\/li><li>August: 31 cases.<\/li><li>September (first few days): 5 cases.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Incidence by province<\/h3>\n\n<p>The territorial distribution places the National District and Santiago de los Caballeros as the demarcations with the highest number of reports. The National District leads the list with 23 cases, closely followed by Santiago with 22. Other locations with notable figures include Santo Domingo Este (19), Hig\u00fcey (13), and La Romana (12).<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies suicide as the third leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29, highlighting the urgency of addressing this phenomenon as a priority public health issue.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Risk factors and historical context<\/h3>\n\n<p>International health authorities point out that suicide is a multicausal phenomenon. Among the most common risk factors are depression, alcohol use disorders, economic difficulties, interpersonal conflicts, and chronic illnesses. Likewise, situations of social isolation, violence, or discrimination increase the vulnerability of certain population groups.<\/p>\n\n<p>Compared to previous years, the statistics show a trend that requires constant attention. In 2025, the National Statistics Office recorded 585 deaths from this cause, while between 2021 and 2024 the annual figures exceeded 600 deaths.
