The main event, recorded at 2:26 a.m., had its epicenter 53 kilometers from Uvita, in the province of Puntarenas, and was perceptible in various nearby coastal communities.<\/p>\n\n
The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori) attributed the movement to the subduction process of the Cocos plate, a common geological phenomenon in this area of the country. After the initial earthquake, the activity did not cease, with more than 80 aftershocks recorded that have kept authorities and the local population on alert.<\/p>\n\n
Despite the number of seismic movements recorded, several of which exceeded magnitude 4.0\u2014highlighting one of 4.8 at 12:03 p.m.\u2014the official assessment is positive.
