This measure marks a turning point in bilateral ties, which until recently were managed by Neysser Reyes Tijerino, who served as minister counselor and chargé d’affaires.

The origin of the conflict

The rupture occurs following an exchange of positions between both nations regarding the political and electoral situation in Nicaragua. While the Dominican State expressed its official position on the democratic process in that country, Managua responded by appealing to its sovereignty and autonomy in internal decision-making. In response to this deteriorating scenario, the Dominican administration had previously recalled its ambassador to Nicaragua, Acsamary Guzmán Nina, for consultations.

A history of cultural and commercial exchange

The closure of the diplomatic legation comes as a surprise following a period of intense cultural activity and outreach by the Nicaraguan representation. During the last year, the mission organized notable events in the Dominican Republic, such as:

The celebration of La Purísima and the first Maypole in the country.

Tributes to the poet Rubén Darío.

Concerts for peace and documentary presentations in cultural spaces.

Active participation in the International Book Fair and management of municipal cooperation projects.

On the economic front, the bilateral relationship recorded significant figures. By the year 2025, trade between both nations reached 112 million dollars, with a balanced trade balance where Dominican exports totaled 50 million and imports from Nicaragua amounted to 62 million dollars.

Despite current differences, both countries have shared spaces in key regional organizations such as the Central American Integration System and DR-CAFTA, historically maintaining ties of cooperation in tourism, diplomatic training, and risk management.

This mission withdrawal ends a period of continuous diplomatic presence that had been established since October 1966, following the lifting of collective sanctions imposed by the Organization of American States in the middle of the last century. Alofoke Deportes will continue to follow up on any updates regarding this matter of international interest.

Diplomatic tension: Nicaragua closes its mission in the Dominican Republic Diplomatic relations between the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua have entered a phase of uncertainty following the Nicaraguan government’s decision to close its diplomatic mission in Dominican territory.
