Since its founding on September 8, 1965, the institution has been the fundamental pillar in the administration, control, and utilization of water resources, adapting to the current challenges imposed by climate change and the growing demand for water for consumption and agricultural production.

Key infrastructure for development

Over the course of six decades, INDRHI has consolidated a robust strategic hydraulic infrastructure for the country. Among the highlights of its management are:

The construction and rehabilitation of fundamental canals such as Aglipo I and II in Bajo Yuna, YSURA in Azua, La Vigía in Dajabón, and Nizaíto in Barahona.

The implementation of preventive measures, including the adaptation of riverbeds and the installation of gabion walls to mitigate risks in vulnerable communities.

The strengthening of irrigation boards through their ten regional directorates, ensuring more efficient water use in the agricultural sector.

INDRHI continues to be the central axis for guaranteeing water supply, supporting food production, and ensuring energy generation, adapting its strategies to the country’s new environmental realities.

Water security and technology

The institution maintains an active role in the Committee for the Operation of Dams and Reservoirs (COPRE), closely monitoring water levels to ensure supply during droughts. A significant recent advancement has been the commissioning of the Montegrande dam, a high-impact project that is already contributing to flood control and improving the supply for the Regional Aqueduct of the Southwest.

In terms of modernization, the agency is promoting the National Water Quality Monitoring Network and leading the 2025-2045 National Hydrological Plan, which are essential tools for integrated and sustainable resource management.

Anniversary agenda

To commemorate this 61st anniversary, INDRHI has prepared a week of activities that includes agreements with international organizations and universities, technical workshops on irrigation strategies, and forums on coastal management. The program seeks not only to celebrate the institutional trajectory, but also to promote a culture of water and the constant updating of its technical capabilities.

INDRHI celebrates 61 years of leading water management in the Dominican Republic The National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) reaches its 61st anniversary reaffirming its commitment to water security and national development.
