From now on, both hairdressers and cosmetology students must have the necessary training to work with all hair types and textures, a measure designed to eradicate discriminatory practices in beauty salons.

The central objective of this legislation is to eliminate unjustified rejections of clients under technical pretexts. Historically, many people, especially those with curly, coily, or kinky hair, have been excluded from professional services under the argument that the establishment lacks the training to handle their hair type. This reality will change with the mandatory implementation of new educational standards.

Diversity in vocational training

To comply with this new provision, cosmetology programs must integrate into their curricula specialized techniques for the cutting, styling, and care of straight, wavy, curly, coiled, and kinky hair. It is important to highlight that these competencies will be incorporated without the need to increase the total training hours required to obtain a professional license, thus optimizing the preparation of future stylists.

A firm step against discrimination

The law, which was passed in 2023, was championed by Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages and State Senator Jamaal Bailey, and was finally signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul. This regulation reflects New York’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive environment where natural hair texture is no longer a barrier to accessing quality services.

The initiative seeks to expand inclusion within the beauty industry and ensure that hair texture does not become a barrier to receiving service.

With the entry into force of this law, the state reinforces its policies against discrimination, ensuring that professionals in the sector are up to the task of the diversity that characterizes the New York population.

New York implements law to ensure inclusive hair salon services Starting this Tuesday, New York State has implemented a fundamental regulation that marks a turning point in the beauty industry.
